The first impression of this pantomime was that of sheer enthusiasm watching the antics of the performers, young and no so young. Wrexham were joined by Dancing Shoes and principals were from both groups. The set was designed by Gemma Powell and the choreography by Kaylie Smith, two very talented youngsters. Kaylie is indeed 15 and she also gave a very memorable performance as IPP. Alongside Alysha Harrison as DIPP, they helped the show along with their vitality and humour. Indeed the chorus were given lots to do during the story, singing and being able to display their dancing skills.
Robin Hood, played by Gavin Hayes, had a lovely singing voice and gave a relaxed, tender performance, as did Lady Marian played by Lauren Jones. The Sheriff of Nottingham, George James, encouraged his audience to hiss and boo his character, despite having a definite twinkle in his eye.
Robin’s Merry Men, and women, were indeed a happy band. Mary (Ellie Hutchings) and Thomas (Toby Wheeler) certainly had a happy time with Nursey (Keira Bethanie). What a character she was, delighting the audience with her bubbly personality. She so obviously enjoyed every minute of her performance and shared this with everyone. Congratulations Keira.
Several cameo parts added depth and variety to the story. Spirit of The Forest (Angela Roberts) opened proceedings beautifully and was joined later by Spirit of The Night (Philip Main) who had his own language and imaginative costume.
The collaboration between Wrexham Musical Theatre Society and Dancing Shoes was used to the maximum effect in this specially written pantomime. The writer and director, Annie Lewis, was no doubt very pleased with the result.
A most enjoyable show. Thank you.
