Maidenhead Drama Guild’s Robin Hood was a warm, energetic and heartfelt example of community theatre at its very best. From the moment I arrived at Norden Farm, I received a genuinely lovely welcome from director Simon Kelly, who shared how the company had been rehearsing since September and that several cast members were completely new to the stage. That sense of inclusivity and community spirit was evident throughout the performance and is something the society should be rightly proud of.

The production values were strong overall, with a professional-looking set, clear attention to detail, and a cast clearly enjoying themselves. While the opening number, Can’t Stop the Feeling, was well staged, it lacked a little aplomb and depth — likely due to the combination of stage size, cast numbers and varying vocal confidence. The first act was unfortunately hampered by a number of technical issues, particularly with sound, which affected momentum and clarity. However, the second half lifted significantly in pace and energy, and audience engagement increased noticeably, with plenty of interaction and laughter.

Although the script itself felt a little light on traditional pantomime flair — relying perhaps too heavily on “He’s behind you!” moments — the performers’ commitment, some standout comedic turns, and strong choreography (particularly from the junior dancers) ensured the audience left entertained. Overall, this was an enjoyable, good-hearted production that demonstrated the joy, challenge and beauty of community theatre.
