Christopher Fry’s translation from Jean Anouilh’s Invitation to the Castle shows how this French play is quintessentially English with its satirical prod at class prejudices. We may be forgiven in thinking that the mid 20th Century class system was uniquely English but this play shows that the French social system wasn’t too dissimilar.

The large cast of 14 players gave many members parts that are significant enough to give something for everyone to get their teeth into. Set in a large Chateau before, during and after a Summer Ball, we see the wealthy middle classes in their finery. This performance was on a smallish stage but clever usage of entrances and exits, sound effects and references to other parts of the gardens gave to feeling of space and grandeur.

The leading man plays two twin brothers with very different characters and this was very well executed by Stuart Clarke. The twists and turns of the plot makes for a very engaging story of love, wealth and happiness and the audience were entranced throughout.

This fine cast and crew did an excellent job with this complex play and gave a great evenings entertainment.
