Last Saturday I had the good fortune to attend Exmouth Musical Theatre Company’s concert “Rhythm of Life “at Exmouth Pavilion. It was a performance, not only to celebrate the achievements of the company by entertaining and giving so much enjoyment to Exmouth audiences over the years, but to remember two very special people who gave a lot to the company, the former chairman, Val Clarke and former President, David Whitehead, both of whom, sadly passed away in 2013. Both proud Exmouthians and devoted to the society.
All involved in this concert did them both proud.
The Gala performance got off to a cracking start with the singing of 42nd Street. This concert was packed with songs from the many shows that they have performed over the years, including personal favourites of Val and David. There were many show stopping numbers, performed both on the stage and around the hall; spellbinding performances with very high standards of singing and choreography. “I Dreamed a Dream” was sheer magic. It was good to hear some Julian Slade and also music from “Mack and Mabel”, a show we would love to see and hear more of.
The company used the versatility of its members to sing and perform in such a variation of style and content from a very skilful Gilbert and Sullivan medley to a superb rendition of “Jersey Boys”. “Rhythm of Life” was packed with thirty five songs that must have taken some dedicated rehearsing. It appeared slick and seamless in the acting, choreography, direction and musical direction.
There are far too many people to name in this concert, from familiar faces through to comparative newcomers; all performing their hearts out ;for the audience, the Company, for Exmouth and most of all on this occasion for Val and David,
Well done E.M.C.O. another triumph! Can’t wait for the next!
