RENT is not for either sexually inhibited performers or audience! You have to fully embrace these modern day Bohemians and go with them. YMTC and we the audience did just that and RENT evolved! This production was wholly reliant on every member of the company because at all times there was business going on! 'Rent' demands full commitment to play such diverse characters.
Mark is a double role not only is he the nice easy going self - involved hyper intellectual film maker he is the shows narrator! Davis Williams grabbed this role completely and found the perfect balance. Rob Reid as self absorbed Roger the love burned H.I.V positive rock guitarist was highly credible and watching his frustration wanting to love Mimi was palpable! Aimee Barlow’s portrayal of Mimi the drug-stoked girl ever high! Was tempestuous and temptress rolled into one with an ironic innocence almost childlike. Small note, perhaps in her last scene she could have been a little more disheveled and not as healthy! Maureen’s (Lucy Franks) Over the Moon was precise and funny and was a little light relief from the rest of the dramas evolving, her own relationship a game to be played at! Playing a transvestite is not something many men would or could to do but Keigan Passmore did! Angel is a demanding role both physically and mentally, Keigan is a strong dancer and playing this role has given him the opportunity to hone his acting skills, making his portrayal believable and a joy to watch. Ensemble work and singing was powerful. Dialogue accents and delivery were strong. Dancers were totally uninhibited when performing the highly charged raunchy moves. Thoughtful choreography cleverly captured the most intimate moments. The Set was a minefield for the company with so much on stage! But all necessary to creating the atmosphere of the apartments and the tenant’s lives behind closed doors. Compelling to watch with something always gently pulling focus... Overall this production was the complete package! Well done.
