As soon as the curtain opened, there was a wow factor as the set was superb. The more I looked the more detail there was setting the tone for the period. Noel Coward’s plays are very wordy, with sharp witty sentences and this was no exception therefore they can be a real challenge to perform. The Exmouth Players can hold their heads up high as they lived up to the challenge well. The casting was good with everyone complementing each other and fitting together like a jigsaw puzzle. Felicity had some wonderfully witty lines and she is to be congratulated on managing such a pivotal part with distinction. Moxie had the character just right and was a pleasure to watch, moving through various moods and mixed emotions with great skill and aplomb. Creswell, the Butler looked very imposing, had some tongue twisting and ponderous speeches and delivered them well. Peter and Nigel gave polished performances and got the accents and “Coward” persona spot on.
Miranda gave a convincing and glamorous performance with just the right light and shade. Don, John, Cynthia and Alice gave very good performances in their supporting roles. The music used to punctuate the play was well chosen and very apt; setting the play in its appropriate era.
Wendy Bishop is to be congratulated, the groupings were very pleasing to the eye and the cast well dressed; overall a evening of good entertainment in a wonderfully intimate theatre and with a most appreciative audience.
