It is always a delight to see societies who not only have a strong team of young people involved in the show as dancers and Ensemble but also cast them in leading roles giving them an opportunity to develop their confidence, skill, and experience. Wraysbury Players’ annual pantomime of Rapunzel does just that with a very strong young cast with speaking roles for most and excellent performances from teenagers as Rapunzel, Waylon , Ms Jobs and Ms Worth.
The challenge for them all is that Rapunzel is a thin plot and Ben Crocker’s script seemed to be very weak. The production was driven along by Dame and Evil stepmother who revelled in the audience engagement which was handled very well.
The local Dance Academy added some cute dance routines as woodland animals and water nymphs which added real charm to the story telling and set the scenes and there was some appropriate underscoring from the two piece band to cover the simple scene changes that worked well. The sense of a community celebrating amateur dramatics was reinforced by the bold tradition of having a cast line up in the foyer as the curtain comes down so the audience can personally congratulate each cast member and we could hear directly from each of the older and younger members of the cast how much they had enjoyed the show. The youthful cast showed great potential and with the experienced performers around them can develop. It must be hoped that they all stay engaged in the society and progress as performers in the coming years.
