I was very interested in seeing this pantomime, as I had never come across it before - we all know the story of the young girl captured by the Wicked Witch and locked in the tower - bored, lonely and growing her hair, so that the Witch could climb up it - and the odd Prince, to rescue her!

As always, Whitkirk gave their audiences a great production to set off the festive season - the Director, Penelope Carroll, made the most of an excellent script (un-credited), bringing the story to life with gusto and humour.

The principal cast were, as always with this company, of the highest calibre - good diction and strong singing. We had a genuine and pretty 'Rapunzel' in Laura Wilkinson, the dashing 'Prince Fredrick', superbly played by Louise Norbury-Robinson, who was also the Musical Director. Keith Speight played his top-notch 'Dame Beatrix Bouffant', the Court hairdresser, with Matthew Jackson as 'Frankie' his confident and engaging son. Also in the cast were pretty 'Fairy Flora' (Charlotte Blundell), the very wicked 'Gothel the Witch (Charlotte Jackson), the excellent comedy duo 'Curly' and 'Bob' (Heather McDermott and Claire Williamson), a stern King and fluttery Queen (Kate Bentley and Sheila Jameson), and a very military 'Captain of the Guard' (Nick Jackson).     All these characters engaged superbly with the audience, with many Brownies and Scouts in full voice, answering back and so enjoying themselves. A clever touch for me was to create 'Pierrots' as minor principals and ensemble - they also moved the set around to create different scenes - a master stroke, in my opinion - it moved the production along at a fast pace.

I have already mentioned Penelope and Louise's excellent direction and musical direction, especially the use of music made famous by Anthony Newley and Leslie Bricusse. The choreography, by Charlotte and Claire, cast members, was entirely suited to the playing area - Helen Thomson was Dance Captain as well as being a Pierrot. The costumes worked well along with some intricate make-up.

The backstage crew, headed by the inimitable Andrew Thomson, had created stylish sets and props. Lighting and sound, immaculate as always, in the talented hands of Adam Moore and Ian Thomson.

This was truly a family pantomime, not oniy in content, but behind the scenes as well - a real team effort. I was so pleased to see the recent renovation work carried out at Sy Mary's Hall - it looked lovely and nicely timed for the pantomime week.

I was delighted to present the company with a NODA award as runner-up in the recent National Programme and Poster Competition.

My sincere congratulations to you all !
