~~Described as a nostalgic glimpse into the heyday of radio this musical journey through 20th century airwave history was devised by Wellington Art Centre member Rebecca Beard. We were escorted through our journey by Edgar and Rose and their three children who positioned onstage throughout the production shared with us the joy of hearing the King’s voice for the first time, the outbreak of war and numerous other air wave firsts. A perfectly matched couple with sweet children totally engaged us and linked the scenes beautifully. Musically there were lots of strong performances, highlights being a German rendition of Lily Marleen and an emotional Moon River. Fun radio comedy sketches were included, a favourite being Dick Barton, Special Agent, the Goons also caused great mirth for those in the audience who remembered the programme and even knew all the lines.
This was a first for the teenage choreographer and a perfect venue to cut your teeth on the complexities of staging a 20+ people and getting them to move with ease, Ashleigh managed this admirably. As is now expected the technical team faced the challenges of creating magic in a tiny space and created atmosphere and pathos through lighting effects and projections. Costumes were timely and appropriate. Another thoroughly enjoyable evening of themed entertainment which is often a highlight of the WAA late autumn calendar , well done one and all this gave everyone a chance for everyone to shine.
