Whilst, for me, not one of Ronald Harwood’s strongest pieces, there is nevertheless humour aplenty and it gives a great opportunity for four mature performers to take on meaty roles. The worries and health issues of the characters, the living of their lives looking backwards to both former glories and their place in society, and ahead to an accelerating decline, struck a resonance with the audience. Four seasoned performers worked well together and gave a real sense of fear of the passing of their time. A nice solidly built set, decorated in a good colour palette, made for a very believable setting. With decent furniture, pictures and the musical instruments, it really set us in the right place.

This was an entertaining evening and the audience responded well. Playing elderly characters whose delivery is, of necessity, slower and more deliberate, a bit more pace and pointing would have raised it further, for me. However it was a well staged and well executed show and Theydon are to be congratulated on another accomplished production.
