Thank you for inviting me to your production of George Bernard Shaw’s famous play Pygmalion. Carefully designed and with a strong team of actors whose acting talent shone through, Henley Players again treated the audience good night of theatre.
Together the director and cast had woven together a dynamic piece of theatre which ebbed and flowed perfectly with the pace of the storyline, capturing the nuances of George Bernard Shaw’s writing so that the message ‘being of high social class is not an indicator of goodness’ came through clearly. The director had worked with the cast to bring together some strong characterisations, which blended very well, and he had developed a genuine rapport between the cast members. All of the cast inhabited their characters developing believable relationships.
Using a simple set design with overhead projection to signpost each Act and location, we were transported to London in the early 1900’s and allowed the skills of the cast to draw us into the story. The costumes were very authentic for the period with some very fine dresses for the upper classes. Albert Higgins’ dustman costume was great and the changes in costume for Eliza as she transformed into a ‘lady’ were well chosen, as was the change in her hairstyle. As always there was a lot of attention to set dressing and properties ensuring that they were authentic for the era.
This was a great production by Henley Players with excellent acting performances and it was lovely to see new members in the cast.
