Princess Ida is not the most well known of the G. & S. repertoire but does give scope for some excellent acting and singing which this production had in abundance. Robert Thurman (King Hildebrand) as usual sung and acted with gerat style as the role required. Paul Richmond (Hilarion- Hilderand's son) sang well with a most impressive stage presence. Leon Waksberg (Cyril) and Tom Daley (Florian) Hilarion's friends gave him strong backing with some finely sung numbers. Malcolm Parkinson (King Gama) was in fine form giving a superb strongly characterised interpretation. David Parker (Arac) Jeremy Shoesmith (Guron) and Brook Carbutt (Scynthius) all displayed fine voices especially in the 'This helmet,I suppose' number. Anna Trent (Princess Ida) was most convincing with some fine acting and maybe the finest soprano voice on the G. & S. circuit. The main roles were completed by three very fine singing and acting roles from Stephanie Roe (Lady Blanche) Carol Parkinson (Lady Psyche) and Rebekah Barker (Melissa) a very fine cast indeed. Most excellent costumes and a very good stage set along with a delightful orchestra led by Nicholas Whitaker. Graham Weston can be well pleased with this production on his return to Batley G. & S.
