Written and directed by Nigel and ably supported by Jacky with some original songs Pirates of the Backwater was a well-crafted piece of panto fun. The usual concepts of panto were evident, a vibrant chorus who sang well and supported the principals admirably, Mollie Hotpot a dame with attitude, a Captain of a pirate ship sporting a pair of fishnets and long boots who falls in love with a pretty village girl, a full set of ingredients to create the festive mood. There was a touch of disguise to add to the fun with Lizzie (principal girl) having wanderlust and dressing as a cabin boy ‘Leo’ so that she can see the world, but as with all panto’s there was a happy ending as she revealed her deception to her true love. Use of puppets was a fun addition with Polly the parrot talking on behalf of her pirate owner and a fabulous Kraken visitation through the audience. A highlight was the ‘beautiful’ sirens of the sea, although they did slightly upstage the young lovers with their ‘dancing’ and singing. Backcloths were total works of art and were lit sympathetically, costumes were colourful and inventive. Everyone had a fabulous time both on and off stage and Roadwater began the Christmas season with style…I personally can’t wait for next year.
