A warm welcome greeted audience members as they entered the chocolate box village of ‘Uppa Churcha’ in Northern Italy (actually a village hall in the Swale district of Kent, England). The setting for the Upchurch Players 31st pantomime, Pinocchio.
The glossy fun packed programme prepared us to be transported into ‘Pantoland’ and set the scene for the show with a selection of unasked questions, including: Will Mamma’s Double Doughnut Delights finally win over Geppetto or will he marry her for her dough? A great touch! As we settled into our seats an announcement in an Italian accent informed us that everyone in the audience was under the age of 14, giving permission for those of us slightly older, to join in with all the traditional elements of pantomime. Let the panto begin!
The Writer and Director, Adam James captured all the magic of panto including topical jokes, local references and plenty of opportunities to shout, sing, boo and laugh out loud. The cast of 23 onstage and many more behind the scenes kept us very well entertained. This original production had something for everyone and a credit to community theatre and what can be achieved. The set was beautifully painted and brought to life with working props producing sweets and even ice cream. Lovely bright matching costumes and make-up. And a well lit stage, sound system and even a pianist.Understandably, there were a few first night nerves but with the audience fully “behind you” showing their support, the show had a great opening night and all the cast looked like they were having a lovely time, as did the audience, including Brian who caught the eye of Mamma!Pantoland is truly magical and congratulations to the Upchurch Players for bringing together a community, young and older members having a shared experience and keeping the tradition of Pantomime and theatre very much alive.
