Llandaff Musical Society brought the Christmas spirit to Cardiff with Pickwick a musical based on the Pickwick Club Posthumous Papers by Charles Dickens.

Welshman Sir Harry Secombe made the title song If I Ruled The World, famous.

This musical has a wonderful score with innovative lyrics.

Chris Edwards, Snodgrass, Chris Randall, Tupman David Evans, Winkle commanded the stage with effortless natural acting as Members of the Pickwick Club.

Jason Price as Alfred Jingle, showed there is no limit to this young man’s creativity. His ‘Very’ number was skilful, enhanced by innovative choreography by Sharon Fitzgerald in this scene and throughout the production! His scenes with Aunt Mary, Annette Beechey were very amusing, great interaction.

Golden voiced John Sadler looked the part and made a wonderful Samuel Pickwick his relaxed jolly presence; the right measure of fun and powerful timbre of his superb voice in every number delighted the audience.

Clare Spear as Mrs Bardell gave an excellent characterisation, and Malcolm Lucas as Sam Weller also excelled.

Props not all true to the Victorian era and the dialogue in this musical has a tendency to be disjointed which is a pity. Sound/ lighting at times needed tightening

However lighting of the Debtors prison scene was particularly effective, very good ensemble reaction and the chorus brought lively scenes with creative choreography.

Exceptional costumes by Script To Screen, Cardiff.

An outstanding rousing showstopper with Pickwick, That’s What I’d Like For Christmas delighted

Well done Director Derek Grattidge, MD David Winterbottom, Choreographer Sharon Fitzgerald and team, an inventive production, perfect for the festive season.
