PETER PAN RETURNS A panto in the park with a script by Chris Egan was an outside production by Micheldever Society and a summer panto; their first production since ‘Beauty and the Beast’ in January last year.    It was full of traditional panto features, rousing opening song, local references and lots of energy.  There were some modern twists to the story including the fact that Wendy was the Darling’s babysitter, not their daughter.

Scenery, Set and Properties. The covered stage had a neutral backdrop scene changes were indicated with large props – Jolly Roger wheel, cast dressed as trees etc.

Costumes: The costumes were in keeping with the story; stylish dress for Wendy, the pirates in stripes and Mildew in fluorescent pink fairy garb.

Lighting and Sound: The lighting was difficult to assess due to the varying natural light.   The sound was generally good but occasionally dipped and made it difficult to understand dialogue with some characters.    The singing was good performed enthusiastically and with obvious enjoyment.  The solos were of a high standard.

The production:  A lot of work had gone into this panto as the group faced many challenges in bringing the show to the stage due to the Covid restrictions.  It was a shame that the wet and windy weather made conditions difficult for the audience – in some instances making seeing and hearing the action.  There were some special moments for me including The Lost Boys’ rendition of ‘Hey! Hey! We’re the Lost Boys’ using ‘The Monkees’ theme song and ‘Reach for the stars’ which ended the first half. After I left there was a power cut but audience members have commented on the dedication and ability of the cast to continue the show without accompaniment.   Well done to MVG but I look forward to appreciating their future efforts in the dry!!
