After a successful, enjoyable performance of this pantomime several years ago, the society decided to undertake a rewrite, step forward the director Tim Leat with an unstoppable pen and a respectable end result. The opening gave a picture of 70’s London, a true representation with excellent singing despite the platform shoes playing havoc with the floor mic’s! First night saw its fair share of cast nerves resulting in some wobbly solo numbers which clearly had the potential for improvement as confidence grew. Led by a dauntless, strangely likeable Captain Hook, crew certainly were as motley as one would wish, each diverse in character, making the most of their droll dialogue, my favourites being the camp Barry Manilow lookalike and comical Smee. The lost children along with a capable Peter, had great fun on the climbing poles and hatches of their den, just one small part of an excellent set, designed and constructed in house. With energy and confidence they performed as troupers, attacking the extremely difficult chorus numbers with tremendous credibility. It is unusual to have two comedy duos’, but on this occasion we were treated to squaws Hunt M High and Hunt M Low and lads Sauce Pan and Marzi Pan, their names as funny as their performance. Dashing snowflake lights personified Tinkerbell with a clever lighting illusion of coming back to life, after her demise, lovely to watch. Piece de resistance of the production has to be the almost life-size crocodile, an absolute work of art. Without wanting to disillusion the idea, it was basically a cast member lying on a skateboard incorporated into a costume, but boy it looked good, particularly when it dragged Captain Hook by the arm off the stage on his tummy, fabulous!
