The last few productions this company have produced have been ‘who done it’ but this offering was a real comedy. The choice of this play by Robin Hawdon, having been previously produced in over thirty countries, was a message in itself prompting not to hold your Stag Night on the eve of one’s wedding. A tight knit cast of six players had the audience rolling in their seats with laughter.
The set representing the bridal suite was cleverly designed by Annemaria Jones and split into two halves with a door into the bedroom, with all appropriate props placed. Lighting cues were spot on throughout the performance and costumes were well thought out.
Each character was well cast and the Director must be congratulated on an excellent production. Giving nothing away, the piece opened when a panicking Groom – Bill, played by Kevin Dalziel, found himself in a compromising position with a Wedding Guest named Judy –Rowena Owen. These two set the pace for the whole play. John Owen took the role of Best Man, Tom, ducking and diving, shielding the Groom from gossip whilst trying to get the wedding off the ground. The Bride, Sue Downes was just searching for answers to many questions about the Groom, throughout the performance.
Annmaria Jones was perfectly cast as Julie the Chambermaid who didn’t miss a trick, whilst Susanne Clayton as Daphne, Bride’s Sister, completed the cast. Everyone in the cast were experienced performers and demonstrated their stagecraft, culminating in a fast moving, fun piece of drama with no pauses, beautifully presented. This was evident by the rousing accolade the Company received.
Thank you Denbigh Phoenix Players for a great evening’s entertainment, we laughed all the way home.
