Written by Peter Gordon” Out Of Focus” is a lovely, light-hearted comedy. The local church hall has been seriously over booked one evening. The Badminton team arrive expecting to play a match, only to find the Brownies already occupying the rooms. Shortly they are joined by an eccentric gentleman thinking he has been booked to deliver a slide show and talk about steam engines. Later the Vicars wife arrives for the first rehearsal of a pantomime. Add to this, a married couple with obvious issues, the main one being the husbands secretary from work, who also turns up expecting to play badminton. The first scene is therefore some what chaotic as they all argue their points of view. However, eventual they all agree to work together to put on the pantomime
With a large cast of nine, I thought that the Ferndown Drama team made an excellent job of this very funny play. Their individual performances were all very good and there was some excellent characterisation..
Unfortunately I did feel that the delivery of the script was a little hesitant in places and there were several times where action did lack a bit of pace.
The set looked very good and work well . I did wonder where the kettle was, when they were making teas and coffees in act one. Also I thought that the badly dented, and obviously empty cans, used for the after show party in the final scene spoilt the effect a little.
Overall it was very enjoyable production with lots of laughs and good comedy performances
The audience clearly enjoyed the play because they were laughing and chuckling throughout. I felt thar many them may have encountered this sort of situation and could have met the type of characters portrayed in this play.
Well done to all concerned
