~~From the moment the small combo started I knew this was going to be a good show and I wasn’t wrong, the whole cast lit up the stage and gave a performance well deserving of the standing ovation they received on Saturday night when I was there, not only standing but also singing and dancing in the aisles.
This show needs to have a good leading man who can carry the whole show on his shoulders, and here they had Ryan Howe who was able to do this with ease, or at least this is how it came over the footlights. It is not an easy part to play as for this it calls for two virtually different characters to depict the good and bad Joe Casey, but this came with ease to Ryan and he was able to show his talents to the full.
The love interest of Joe is Sarah who stands by him throughout most of the show with the exception of a short interlude when she is at university and falls for Callum. Sarah was played with ease by Alice Beane who was able to bring the character to life, none more so than when she sang NW5 with Joe’s father played by David Cooper, both their voices blended together well and when joined by the ensemble was able develop a beautiful sound. The other love interest of Sarah as mentioned above, Callum was played very well by Conor Ramskill who gave a very convincing Scottish accent.
This show also calls for another foursome who are not actually couples but who appear very much together throughout the show. These are Joe’s friends, Emmo and Lewis played by Jacob Whitehead and Luke Shepherd respectively who were able to get every ounce of humour from these parts, they were joined by Sarah’s friends, Billie and Angie played by Holly Lees and Emily Kendall, again these worked very well with the two guys to produce a great combination.
Joe also has another friend who is always around when we see the bad side of him, Reecey played by Lee Caddick who appeared to ooze evil as soon as he walked on stage and strutted around. To help him In his battle with his bad side Joe always had his mum Kath, played by Wendy Prew and his dad played by David Cooper both Wendy and David gave great performances to add to the enjoyment of this show.
This theatre only has a relatively small stage but to accommodate this, the director, Jack Land Noble was able to show his imagination to the full by using minimal but very effective staging again to add the slickness of this very professional show.
Very well done to all involved in this brilliant production.
