On entering the auditorium the scene was set, Casey Street was there awaiting us. The moment the show began it was obvious a treat was instore. This show flashes first back in time and then forwards and into a second dimension, cleverly this was shown through the doors of the terraced houses spinning with subtle lighting. The full company soon burst onto the stage to celebrate Joe’s birthday with infectious enthusiasm. Direction and Choreography used every iota of the space available and although busy the stage never looked overcrowded or messy.
Joe handled his role with self-assurance, his changes from good to bad happened in a flash, often in front of our eyes. These slick changes and his confidence in his fellow cast members and backstage crew showed as he moved swiftly from scene to scene. His relationship with Sarah was tender and the rapport between these two was endearing. They both sang with assurance and their emotional journey both in the realms of the good and bad gave emotional connection to the audience. The ghost of Dad gave a well-placed eerie presence to the proceedings; possibly a little less white base from the MMU team wouldn’t have gone a miss here though. The friends of both Joe and Sarah provided much hilarity with their banter and physical comedy.
The creatives on this production are all quite new to their roles and have shone a bright new perspective on presenting musicals at the Wellesley, they should be congratulated on getting the audience to their feet and buzzing with excitement, well done WAA it was fab!
