Our House

It was a pleasure to have attended the wonderful Questors Theatre for HEOS’ production of Our House. Mike Smith, your District 2 NODA Representative, unfortunately tested positive for Covid recently which prompted an emergency call and my visit here. Thanks to Pam Armstrong for the warm welcome on arrival and the much appreciated pre-show drink.  

The music of Madness, one of the most popular groups of the eighties, is the format for the lively musical, Our House.  Written by Tim Firth, whose work includes ‘Kinky Boots’ and ‘Calendar Girls’, Our House is based in 1980s Camden Town. It tells the story of Joe Casey, who, on the night of his sixteenth birthday, takes Sarah, the girl of his dreams, out on their first date. In an effort to impress her with bravado, he breaks into a building site. When the police turn up, Joe’s life splits into two with Good Joe staying to ‘face the music’ whilst Bad Joe flees the scene leaving Sarah to make her own escape...

Dawn Wightman is to be congratulated as both Director and Choreographer. Our House was quite simply excellent and had all the markings of hard work, energy and pace. The characterisations of each of the actors had been really worked on and it was plain to see everyone was really enjoying being back onstage once again. The entire cast had been well rehearsed and this non-stop production ran smoothly throughout.

The entire cast worked well together and the whole-company numbers were full of energy, pace and enjoyment. ‘Our House’ was terrific, while ‘Baggy Trousers’ and ‘Wings of a Dove’ were both great fun. The excellent use of the Union Jack umbrellas and market stalls during ‘The Sun and the Rain’ greatly added to the performance.

Congratulations to everyone at HEOS and especially those involved with Our House for an excellent evening’s entertainment. It was a pleasure to have provided emergency cover for this production and I’d be delighted to return again if ever needed...
