Whilst wanting to return to the stage, it was a prudent decision for BROS to look at a smaller production on this occasion. Would people be nervous about a return to the theatre, how would this potentially impact on ticket sales and what would the audience think of a smaller production anyway? I imagine that these, and many other questions, were carefully discussed before committing to ‘Ordinary Days’. With a cast of only four, no orchestra or complicated set/costume changes, this was far from the normally lavish BROS musical production I’ve come to admire.
‘Ordinary Days’ is a sung-through show that is set in contemporary New York. It follows the lives of four young people as they each search for meaning, a sense of fulfilment and direction in their lives. This 90-minute musical, without an interval, proved to be an absorbing and entertaining piece of theatre. Set in the early part of this century, sometime after ‘9/11’, it provided an appreciative audience with an absorbing insight into each character’s life, challenges and everyday frustrations. In a production that relied so heavily on vocal skills, it’s important to recognise the quality shown by each of the four cast members.
Congratulations, once again, on the quality and success of ‘Ordinary Days’. I am certain that everyone involved with this production will have greatly enjoyed the production and a return to normality. For now, I wish everyone at BROS success with ‘The Adams Family’ which is due to be staged at Richmond Theatre in January 2022.
