Highly acclaimed with audiences worldwide, Lionel Bart’s successful musical
Oliver! Tragically Lionel Bart sold the stage and film rights to this outstanding work before the vast potential was realised, and died in poverty.
Blackwood’s rousing opening with Workhouse Boys entering in strict rotation and Oliver, talented Thomas Irwin, asking for more and poignantly singing ‘Where Is Love; was very well done. Simon Shelford as Mr Bumble, a rich voice, excellent stage presence bringing scenes alive, perfectly complimented with a superb saucy characterisation of Widow Corney by Andrea Pole
The Sowerberry’s were outstanding, these scenes are an actor’s delight and full advantage was taken, timing and diction perfected by Stuart Wilson as Mr Sowerberry and Cathy Clark as Mrs Sowerberry. Other Cameos well played.
As the Artful Dodger James Rogers gave realism to his role –excellent!
A lovely Nancy, Angharad Jones with her friend Bet, Rachel Brown worked well and the special Bruce Williams gave a fine performance as Fagin
Be Back Soon brought a new dimension with Fagin’s pocket handkerchief umbrella an effective original touch! Throughout, Director Peter Williams original, skilful interpretation was apparent.
Nothing can compare with the entry of Bill Sykes, always chilling and Huw Thomas certainly did the role justice and sang My Name with conviction --- an atmosphere of fear created so well
Rip roaring chorus numbers and an energised ensemble enhanced scenes, the lively orchestra MD Andrea Miskelly enjoying the score of this very enjoyable show.
Swift backstage, appropriate set and immaculate costumes by ACE
The appreciative audience’s applause said it all.
