In the thirteen years as a NODA representative I have been invited to a production of Oliver on five occasions, and have played Mr Bumble in two other productions. Obviously it is a very popular choice of show, always a very good box office and there are always a multitude of enthusiastic children eager to take part.
This excellent production by MTS certainly pulled out the stops. A great set, wonderful costumes, a super small orchestra, faultless sound and lighting with a first class line up principals who, without exception, had excellent characterisation. They were supported by a very enthusiastic, well drilled chorus who were giving their all. The team of children were excellent as the work house kids and Fagins gang.
Oliver looked very angelic and seemed to be very laid back as he gave a superb performance. All the musical numbers sounded excellent and were well received by the capacity audience. The cream of the crop was Nancy’s “As long as he needs me” which was outstanding,
It was a shame that there was no “Bulls Eye” in this production as he is a key part of the story line in the final scenes
I my opinion the false noses of Fagin and Mr Bumble were not required, and I felt that overall the production lacked a little bit of magic. However, it could have been the fact that I had previously seen a production of Oliver, by the same director
