The curtains opened to reveal an interesting set on two levels and what a versatile set it proved to be. The opening number ‘Food Glorious Food’ was full of energy from the young members of the Company their singing was confident, clear with good projection from the soloists. Everyone sang, danced and acted to a very high standard, the pace and vitality never flagging. Much thought had gone into costuming the show and all the costumes were in keeping and added to the overall impact. The set changes had been well planned, and the stage crew were efficient and unobtrusive, never distracting from the action, which was continuing during some of the changes. The lighting had been well designed and was suitably atmospheric. The musical numbers were all delivered with suitable energy, humour or pathos. Musical Director Dave Whittle had achieved an excellent balance with the orchestra and voices, which were all well controlled, everyone coming in at precisely the correct moment. The choreography was well devised and interesting, well taught and executed confidently. Director Daphne Herbert interpreted this familiar musical in an interesting way. This was a well integrated production with everyone in every area working together as one big team.
