In 2020 Poole and Parkstone Productions were well into rehearsals for a production of “OLIVER” when everything was shut down by the pandemic. It has taken four years ,but happily the company were able to secure the rights once again and they have produced a very professional show the was certainly worth waiting for.
With a rather impressive looking set creating a wonderful atmosphere the show captured the audience from the opening number.
The enthusiastic team of children were well drilled and sang their hearts out, and I thought that Oliver and Dodger were both excellent . All the adult roles were well portrayed, with excellent characterisation and there were some very impressive individual performances.. The large enthusiastic chorus looked superb,. and the impressive choreography worked very well, although when the full company were all on stage it did look a little crowded
In my opinion the overall sound balance was very good throughout and the orchestra sounded wonderful..
For well over 60 years Oliver has been a very successful musical , so I did wonder why the right holders felt it needed the script to be updated and the music rescored. However, this very professional production from Poole and Parkstone certainly sold the changes to me. Although I did miss bullseye the dog, I don’t think the ending works the same without him
It was an excellent show and a very enjoyable evening , my congratulations go to everyone concerned
