Oliver! A musical theatre classic. Well known and beloved by so many, including myself. Avenue Theatre’s production of Lionel Bart’s best known musical captured every part of what ‘Oliver!’ is. The scenery was cleverly constructed, so that it could be adapted with the simple change of a picture, a washing line of hankies, a rotation of a wall. The ‘lit’ fireplace (artificially of course), with Fagin’s hidden cupboard was an excellent touch. The use of a painted drop, was also a swift way to change scenery, when outside scenes were required. Various props were also used to dress the stage and give the performers levels to create choreographic visual interest for the audience. The added touch of a gas lamp down stage left and a bridge down stage right made the set feel almost immersive.I was very impressed with the costumes.
The entire cast were dressed from top to toe in Dickensian garments, bonnets, top hats, flat caps, canes and appropriate footwear. The attention to detail in this particular area was immaculate. The cast staged a strong performance, with lovely vocal performances from various members of the cast. Solos were sung with confidence and chorus numbers with gusto. Some superb characterisations from those in principal and cameo roles. The tip of a hat, the nod of a head, the acknowledgement of the audience – all lovely touches. I must also commend the Avenue Players Juniors on the use of a lovely, but small, stage. It can be tricky to choreograph dances and set scenes in a small space, but this was done effectively and successfully.
Congratulations to the director Lisa Thornton together with her creative team of MD Steve Austin and Choreographer Grace Stepaniuk on a job well done to all. The cast and crew should all Consider Yourself a success.
