Oliver

The children take centre stage from the start and in a well choreographed “Food Glorious Food.” all the kids of varying ages and abilities gave strong performances which continued throughout the show as Fagins Gang and as children of London.

Oliver, played by Cameron Rosser, had the angelic voice required for the ‘Where is Love’ solo and gave a strong determined portrayal of Oliver. Thomas Kochalski as The Artful Dodger was full of personality, great talent whose character never faltered during the whole performance. Sarah Knight’s Nancy was full of punch, yet with that softer side needed, her performance of ‘As Long As He Need Me’ was loved by the audience.

Daniel Thomas was a very convincing Bill Sykes and brought power and a menacing dark side to the character, which I loved. Derek Williams as Mr Bumble was in fine voice. Deborah James as Widow Corney had the character to a t.

As for the infamous Fagin, Gavin Nelson’s portrayal was just right. His mystical and charming character had the audience hanging on his every word.

There were some good characterisations by the Sowerberrys, Damon Miles (Mr Sowerberry), Julie Griffiths (Mrs Sowerberry) and Megan Jones (Charlotte) and

Elis Sleight (Noah Claypole) added to the Undertakers’ scene.

Good supporting performances by Julia Kelleher (Bet), Melanie Colbeck-Jones (Mrs Bedwin), Tony Kingsbury (Mr Brownlow) and Karl Griffiths (Dr Grimwig).

The principal characters were supported by an accomplished ensemble that provided strong performances in the big numbers combined with a well-balanced orchestra ably lead by musical director Nathan Jones.

The set was great and it was lovely to see it being used well throughout the show. The costumes were good and lighting very effective. Congratulations to Julie Griffiths and Derek Williams for their first class choreography and direction.
