An outstanding Summer Project from the Beck Youth theatre which was achieved in a mere ten days of rehearsal despite some pretty significant initial difficulties, such as the lack of a play, performance rights and a venue! BYT’s “Newsies” was a high-energy a musical featuring complex choreography and staging challenges, a full band and a cast of 64 young people ranging from 8 to 19. The backstage and technical crew combined seasoned members and those still learning their craft to produce a show to be proud of.
Telling the tale of the historic Newsboys strike against the Pulitzer publishing magnet, the musical is set in New York in 1899. Costume, lighting and sound all combined to set the scene perfectly and the set was created in a minimalistic but very effective way using crates, planks, wooden benches and wheels. The young actors performed with pace and emotional understanding beyond their years and their singing and dancing skills were extraordinary. The whole production was a sheer delight to watch and was received by a well-earned standing ovation from a super-enthusiastic audience. I can sum it up in a word: Joyous!
