Nell Gwynn charts the rise of an unlikely heroine, from her roots into her success as one of Britain's most celebrated actresses (the only one at the time,) and her place in the heart of the King. But at a time when women were second-class citizens, can her charm protect her from the dangers of Royal Court?

This play to me was 'Bawdy' and stylishly directed by Derek Brown. A wonderful Insight into the life of Nell Gwynn. De5248

rek moved his actors around the small stage with pace and his choice of cast was perfect, from the youngest to the oldest, all putting everything they had into their characters - not an easy task for this period. There were so many solid performances. This being the case and such a large cast it would be unfair of me to single out any one of you out. You all looked as if you were enjoying your various parts and there was a sense of camaraderie coming out to us in the audience. I loved the simplicity of the staging, simple but affective with no heavy sets to be moved, making it move swiftly along. Costumes, props and lighting were all spot on. Interacted with some great musical interludes by musical director Ben Saul.

Derek, you and all involved in Nell Gwynn should be very proud of this excellent piece of theatre. I certainly enjoyed my evening at the Arden. Keep this high quality of theatre coming!!
