It was a pleasure to have once again been able to visit with Carlton Theatre Group for this, their first production since ‘Twelfth Night’ in November 2019. Covid regrettably forced all societies into an unwanted, and lengthy, period of inactivity and it was extremely pleasing to once again attend a CTG production.
Written by Jessica Swale, Nell Gwynn recounts the life of a young woman, who works her way up from a prostitute to leading London actress in the male-dominated world of the playhouse. Nell’s charisma and wit ultimately attracts the attention of King Charles II and before long the two begin an intense affair…
Susanna Statton is to be congratulated as Director and for assembling a very strong cast. This was another demanding play, by CTG, and the cast had clearly benefited from countless hours of rehearsal, clear direction and attention to detail regarding their individual character development. The end result was a very entertaining production. Daryl Griffith deserves much credit as both Musical Director and Composer. The music, and lyrics, were in keeping with the period and a welcomed addition to the play.
What made this production come together so well was it’s a wholly collaborative company affair. There were a number of excellent individual performances and strong support provided by Ensemble members, and the entire production flowed very well. It should be noted that even though this play has quite a lengthy running time it never slowed. I particularly enjoyed those ‘behind the scene’ moments, and the dynamics, amongst the eccentric cast of characters. Swale’s script excels here with comic relief offered in the form of numerous one-liners and petty rivalries – not just at the playhouse itself but also within Charles’ court.
Congratulations to CTG and the entire cast for delivering yet another high quality production. I look forward to next visiting in August, for Terrence Rattigan’s play – After the Dance.
