Based on George Bernard Shaw`s `Pygmalion` The success of My Fair Lady relies quite heavily on the performances of its three main characters. “My Fair Lady” is amongst the most loved of stage musicals, and for good reason: it’s a cracking tale packed with memorable characters and classic songs.
Holly Thody – Eliza Doolittle – anchored the show with confidence, maintaining both accents well [cockney and posh]. Her fine soprano voice coped well with the lovely songs delivered in both versions of her developing character.
Adrian Bevan – Professor Higgins – was in the capable hands of Adrian Bevan who gave a well rounded characterisation of the spoilt, chauvinistic male.
Steve Banner – Colonel Pickering - delivered a delightful, charming characterisation, with the sensitivity and care that is needed. His mannerisms and expressions were spot on and he radiated warmth and humour which gave a lovely depth to his character.
Good supporting performances and characterisations by Haydn Holder [Doolittle], Gay Rogers [Mrs Higgins], Sheryl Westoby [Mrs Pearce], Matthew Bryant [Freddy] and Dee McIlroy [Mrs Eynsford-Hill].
The small ensemble worked hard throughout this production ably supporting the cast. Many members of the company ensemble had small roles as well and tackled these enthusiastically.
The production was attractively costumed and the staging worked well. Set, lighting and sound complimented this production.
