My Fair Lady is the story of Eliza Doolittle a flower seller from Covent Garden, who takes lessons from Professor Higgins on how to speak ‘proper’ English in order to better herself, by becoming a lady. Based on George Bernard Shaw’s play Pygmalion, the musical score by Lerner & Loewe, My Fair Lady has become a real favourite with theatre-goers.
The set is simple but effective; costumes, lighting and sound are also good. The director Wendy South has a great cast with this production. Rachael Thorpe has worked well the young cast as the singing is very good - this can be a tricky score and the adaptation’s work well. The choreographers Anita Pritchard and Emalene Hickman have worked to the abilities of everyone, as the dancing is fun and you can see they are all enjoying themselves.
Amelia Sly was good in the role of Eliza. She was confident and got the comedy across, with a nice singing voice. Thomas Woodcock also gave a great performance as Henry Higgins, with just the right amount of arrogance and self-importance. I liked ‘I’ve grown accustomed to her face’, both characters worked well together.
Other great characters are Rebecca Reed as Mrs Pearce the housekeeper and Ben Pavitt as Colonel Pickering. Abbie Miller is lovely as Mrs Higgins, I also really liked Joe Mawby, he has a lovely face and was super as Eliza’s love-struck suitor Freddy Eynsford-Hill. He brought a tear to my eye with his ‘On the street where you live’. Lucy Miller plays Mrs Eynsford-Hill.
This was a good production - well done to all involved.
