Musical Extravaganza III

I was very much looking forward to visiting MAOS's production of 'Musical Extravaganza III', as it was my first time since becoming their NODA Regional Representative - and I was not disappointed!

The company presented a first-class production of favourite musical numbers, some well-known and some not so.

Michael Kirkby, who devised, directed and choreographed the show, has to be congratulated on a slick and fast-moving production, which at times left the audience breathless with it's drive and pace (not to mention the cast!) These energetic and talented amateur performers gave the audience much to enthusiastically applaud as each number displayed strong vocal and dancing skills. Each set piece had been well thought through by Michael, giving all a chance to shine - and they did!

The musical direction was in the very capable hands of David Hann - this kind of musical show involves a lot of hard work for a musical director and also a committment by a dedicated cast to attend rehearsals, not easy these days!  David headed a strong band, consisting of three keyboards and a drummer, which produced a great sound.

The costumes, from a hard working Wardrobe team, complimented the production; is it too old fashioned to say everyone on stage looked 'well-turned out' and footwear just right. It does make all the difference.

A simple set on two levels, enhanced by excellent lighting, enabled the cast to make full use of the stage.

I must make special mention of the Saturday Club Team, a group of youngsters eager to show off their considerable talents - I do hope they continue to perform in amateur theatre as adults!

Last (and not least!) the 'Pirates of Penzance' foot-tapping compilation as the finale of the show sent us all out of the Town Hall with beaming faces - a testament to an excellent evening's entertainment!
