From Cilla Black to Hairspray. from Student Prince to songs by Harry Warren. from Queen via Ballads and then on to Abba. All this interspersed with comedy sketches. What more could one need for a good evening’s entertainment.
The show opened with an excellent number, “Give me that Spotlight” and continued at a cracking pace with the afore-mentioned choices all being well and ably performed by all members of the Society. The soloists, too numerous to mention, gave good interpretations of their pieces and I suspect that they were given those which suited their voices. This worked very well and gave an enthusiastic audience plenty to applaud.
The comedy routines also kept the audience highly amused even though much of the material was quite old. Yes, the old gags are still the best. These routines would have gone down just as well in a pantomime. They were well performed and delivered with pace.
There were no stars in this show, just a group of singers and actors pulling together as a first class team. Director, Josephine Owen put the whole show together with a simplicity of movement which was quite effective.
Accompanist, Jasmine Gillespie had obviously worked hard to train the group and on the night she was tireless in her endeavours in the orchestra pit.
The costumes were indeed remarkable, the cast being exceptionally dressed throughout the entire show in both matching and contrasting outfits.
Jess Boulton, the lighting technician did all that was asked of her and I note that her lighting of the set is improving with every show.
The audience thoroughly enjoyed the show and appeared somewhat reluctant to leave at the end. A super night.
