This play is set in Maple Lodge, a home for retired actors, in the middle of a heavy fall of snow, which means that it is cut off from the outside world. In-fact it was very aptly timed as it was just after the ‘Beast form the East’ and the audience empathised with the situation. It was well written with, all the rivalries and backbiting of people with large egos, and cleverly constructed to keep the identity of the murderer concealed to the end. The set had been well designed and constructed creating the feel of a spacious sitting room in such an establishment. There was a large window centre back stage, with a window seat and a lovely view of the garden with snow falling much of the time. There were doors stage right and left, which led to different parts of the house, and a cupboard door stage right. It had been well furnished and dressed with precise attention to detail, including an Oscar type award sitting on a table. The stage was well lit, with the addition of lights shining into the room as the doors opened. The costumes had been well thought out and helped to establish the characters of the actors.
The script gave good indication of the characters of the people who were gathered together, and this talented cast had interpreted them well.
This was an excellent evenings’ entertainment, a well-written Murder Mystery, confidently acted under the strong director ship of Joy Rossilli. There were no weak links, plenty of well-delivered humour and a good pace throughout.
