It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas, well in Barnsley anyway. To celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Lamproom Theatre, Lamproom Musical Theatre Company chose Mr Scrooge for their November show.

I must congratulate the set designers and builders, as the set was superb and perfectly captured the season and era in which the show is set.

For this show to work well, you need a good leading man. LMTC struck gold with casting David Armitage in the title role. From the start of the show to the end, David kept in character, and his diction was perfect. I heard every word, not easy when you have so much to learn.

Scrooge is of course visited by four ghosts, Jacob Marley, Christmas Past, Christmas Present and Christmas Future. All four were played to perfection Tom Parry, Tamsin Kendall - great singing voice, Ryan Hume and Ben Lees.

Highlights for me were ‘The Rolling Year’s’ sang beautiful by Wendy Prew and Ellen Sidebottom and the Act 1 finale, where the ensemble sang in perfect harmony traditional Christmas Carols with falling snow. This not only looked stunning, but sounded stunning, Congratulations to Robert Cooper, Musical Director.

Lee Caddick gave his wonderful voice to not one but two characters , and executed them both wonderfully. Cev Barker portrayed Scrooge’s clerk, Bob Cratchit and he along with the rest of the Cratchit family, provided the show with its emotional scene which reduced me to tears.

I can’t let this review go without mentioning Pat Demetrius and Jo Smith who were simply hilarious as Dottie Dilber and Mrs Prosser. John and I were still laughing the next day at their argument.

This was the perfect way to spend a cold November evening, and truly got us in the Christmas spirit, so much so that I now have my tree up.

Congratulations to all involved in this Christmas cracker.
