With their annual pantomime sadly having to be cancelled last year, it was a pleasure to have visited with Barnes Community Players (BCP) and enjoy their 2021 pantomime - Mother Swan. With the festive season upon us it was also an opportunity to remember that, since 2000, BCP has supported local charities by donating profits from each production. This is a very commendable action and example of community involvement that’s to be applauded. I’m certain that, given the past 18-months, all funds from this year’s pantomime will be most welcome by those organisations selected.

Pantomime season is a time for the cast, and audience, to have fun and enjoy themselves. With the required Dame, plenty of bad puns, local references and audience participation Mother Swan certainly included all the expected ingredients that ensured a lively and entertaining show. This heart-warming story of love, greed and ultimately ‘just doing the right thing’ was set in the village of Barnesville.

The audience was greeted by a set that was relatively simple but colourful and in stark contrast to the bleak winter weather outside. This worked very well, the changes as they were, were slick and without any fuss. Space onstage was kept free for those performing.

This production worked well, and ran smoothly, giving the audience ample opportunity to become fully involved and have fun. With sing-a-long music, plenty of ‘behind you’ and ‘oh no its not’ moments this proved to be another successful venture for the society.

Congratulations to everyone at BCP, and those specifically involved with Mother Goose, and for bringing the Christmas pantomime tradition back after an enforced hiatus! Here’s hoping your 2021 production schedule is a success and can be delivered without any further interruptions.
