Thank you very much for inviting me to your production of Mother Goose

Piracy was in the air as this production of mother goose was set in a small seaside village in Cornwall whilst a group of French pirates sat out at sea not too far away waiting to plunder on the advice of their two secret spies Chish and Fips. All will not go in favour of the pirates however as the spies turn instead to the good way aiming to instead help Mother Goose which in turn causes the rest of the pirate crew to change their ways in order to save Mother Goose and the orphanage from ruin at the hands of Sir Jasper Pillock and Stinky Norman.

The opening number was nice and the ensemble were loud and well heard, their voices projecting nicely to the back of the theatre. It was a shame however that not all of the soloists could be heard with the absence of radio head mics for them.

The script was written in house by member Geoff Coventry and was very good. Filled with lots of local and current references and plenty of Adult Humour that at times was quite close to the edge whilst still remaining innocent enough for the younger members of the audience. Some song lyrics were also re-written for the production and this was done very effectively which contributed greatly to the continued story telling here.

The ensemble were used effectively throughout and it is always nice to see the young company being added wherever they can be. The youngsters took the opportunity twice to show off their talent with a rendition of “Honk!” as a nod to their next production and then again with “A Pirate went to Sea”. The confidence on display from some of these young people was amazing especially given the fact that the youngest amongst them was just four years old!

The inclusion of some magic tricks was a nice touch. The first of two tricks being used to do the traditional Wranglers shout outs being very good, well received, and well execute. The second being very well received and adding a lot of comedy but execution? Well it was very funny. Though the trick didn’t quite go to plan it was a hilarious moment of audience interaction.

Sir Jasper and Stinky had some great characterisation and work effectively together. Captain Le Merde and his Daughter Fleur were also excellent. The duet between Kevin and fleur was well executed and full of comedy that the audience enjoyed. Costumes were very good as always and the Goose costume was egg-cellent. It would have been nice if the goose could have featured a few more times.

Some key moments of note for me were The Dad’s army, or rather Pirate Army, sketch which was well received and was performed well by all involved. The UV dance number was. Another big hit with the audience and was a nice creative idea that opened act two skilfully. Finally, the 12 days of Christmas was a lot of fun for the audience and full of excitement.

Congratulations on a fabulous show.

Kind regards
