MOTHER GOOSE by Ben Crocker mixed the traditional story of Mother Goose with a few happy additions, including a troll under a bridge and a balloon ride through the mountains in this enjoyable evening of Christmas fun.
The scenery was excellent with flats painted to represent the various areas including a beautiful kitchen/parlour. The bridge where the troll hid out was well constructed and gave real depth to the production. The balloon basket deserves special mention as does the moose head.
The costumes were brilliant: Mother Goose had vibrant dresses and equally colourful wigs! There were numerous costumes for the villagers, snowmen, baby geese and trolls. Fairy Aurora sparkled in in her flowing dress. All were suitable and eye-catching.
The sound was good with music provided by the live band of five musicians. Voice quality varied and sometimes the sound dipped but this didn’t spoil the audience’s enjoyment. The choice of music was clever and appropriate. Technology was used to good effect, as we soared over the mountains, ‘joining’ the balloon ride which was projected onto the pull-down screen.
This engaging production was ably spear-headed on stage by Kay Doughty, a confident and entertaining Mother Goose. It was good to see young people given prominent roles within a cast spanning all age-groups. All the traditional elements were present: contemporary references, slap-stick and audience singing competition. Lines had been learned well and the pace between scenes continues to improve. Good use was made of the auditorium for exits and entrances and this, along with the placing of the band at the back of the hall, helped to bring the audience closer to the action in this large venue. Cast, technical and production teams had worked hard to deliver a lot of fun throughout
