Modern Major General is a new show written by Andrew G Marshall which interweaves some of the most popular songs of Gilbert and Sullivan into the story. The narrative revolves around the trials and tribulations of two amateur musical societies competing for an award at the Buxton Festival.
The show is an intriguing mix of old and new. The use of familiar G & S songs is interesting however the mix of traditional and new words is sometimes perplexing and means the diction has to be stressed even more than usual. The change involving females singing traditionally male songs was refreshing. The show was very well cast and the direction was most skilful. The set was very effective in its simplicity. The Society is to be praised for its adventure with this new show.
