What society can produce two huge shows – Phantom of the Opera & Miss Saigon – in one year? Typically, Fusion’s Ian Milford pushed the boundaries again and directed another great production. Although first night, Direction was tight and every cast member confident in their role. Rebecca’s choreography was spot on – especially the exacting “Morning of the Dragon” and “The American Dream” - a particularly exciting and colourful company number. Costumes throughout were character authentic while suitable for the young people. A few first night minor technical problems occurred in staging, Lighting and Sound.
In many varied roles, chorus singing was excellent and everyone emotionally engaged in the action. Every minor principal had a strong singing voice and acted well. Conor Taggart had a menacing presence in the role of Thuy; Megan McGarry was an engaging Ellen – singing with great sensitivity. Matthew Quinn’s portrayal of John was strong and expressive and his singing of the iconic “Bui Doi” was very powerful. As the Engineer, Cameron Mack gradually became the oily character he needed to be. Adam Williamson was a confident Chris - his singing both powerful and sensitive. He engaged well with Jessica Webb as Kim, whose performance and vocals were beautiful and her gentle care of Katie Bell (Tam) was heart-warming.
Wearing his Musical Director’s hat, Ian controlled his 14 piece orchestra with expertise. Although sometimes a little overpowering, they made a great sound. His well chosen cast were very well tutored – both in solo and ensemble vocals.
A great show from Fusion’s talented youth.
