Having given a couple of John Godber plays STARS decided to use one of his scripts for this year's production. This is the story of 3 bus drivers taking passengers from South Yorkshire to the Rhine Valley. The drivers are Stick (Garry Darby), Frank (Jane Collins) and Larry (Chris Binns) who held tension and hilarity of the play from beginning to end.
I could see John Godber sitting in a seat amongst the passengers with a note book and taking down all the antics and sayings the passengers uttered during the trip, As the programme reveals we meet an assortment of characters (all played by the 3 drivers) shaped by their roots in the mining area of South Yorkshire. They gave us their opinions, foibles and gems of humour. This was the best comedy play I have seen and certainly had the whole audience in stitches.
The set added to the play in that it was plain flats with a map of the actual route to be taken by the buses to Germany. The props also added to the action as all they were were suitcases of different sizes/weights which had to be moved by the drivers at each overnight stop.
Congratulations to STARS for a really wonderful evening's entertainment.
