This show, I have to say, is one of my very favourites, it’s a great story with wonderful songs and extremely witty. EMS did not disappoint, the casting was excellent and everyone put their all into it.
The staging and groupings were very good indeed. It got off to a cracking start with the car scene and then opening to a very good set inside Hareford Hall.
Lady Jaqueline was typically “out for what she could get “she sang and danced well along with the soppy Gerald Bolingbroke who got the character spot on and really put his energy and enthusiasm into it.
Mr Parchester played his part well, although his character was not as defined as it could have been, but “The Family Solicitor” was very well performed
The Duchess of Dene portrayed the character with just the right touch; so often this part can be played over the top but in this production it was pitched just right.
Sir John Tremayne complimented the Duchess and they made the ideal couple. His growing and genuine sympathy for Bill and Sally was well portrayed.
Bill played the typical cockney and had great timing together with masses of energy and versatility, it’s a very demanding role and he together with a vivacious and convincing Sally put great feeling into their parts Charles the butler, Sir Jasper Tring Lord and Lady Battersby all played their character parts well and with commitment to their roles.
“You would if you could” with Jaqueline and Bill in the drawing room was just perfection! I particularly liked the way “the Song of Hareford “was done with the portraits of the ancestors coming to life, this is so rarely done and was performed so professionally. “Once you lose your heart “together with the “Leaning on the Lamppost”were well performed and with great sensitivity. The Chorography was of a very high standard; tap dancing, stage placing and movement. The Lambeth Walk particularly worked well, with jollity and verve .It left the audience happy and smiling just before the interval and looking forward to the rest of the show.
The Orchestra under the direction of Simon Carter did sterling work. A super sound where individual cast members were not overpowered by the music
My heartfelt congratulations to David Youll, this was pretty close to a West End performance; really enjoyed by all.Well done.
