With 20 principal and minor principal roles and plenty of chorus participation, this is an ideal company show.

Bill Snibson, was played with terrific comedic energy by Andy Scott.  Gillian McQuade clearly enjoyed playing Sally - her experience brought out the subtleties of the role. In contrast, Claire Campbell was charmingly snobbish as Lady Jacqueline. The penniless Gerald was played with aplomb by Mark McGuire, whose reactions to the behaviour of his erstwhile fiancée were excellent. Vivian Shepherd made an excellent Duchess  – her whole demeanour was casually aristocratic and “Men of Hareford” beautifully sung. As Sir John Treymane, Colin Boyd found all the comical levity of the character, excelling in his drunken library scene. Tim Pentland was a delightfully eccentric family solicitor.  Lord and Lady Battersby (Colin Gregg & Judith Hall) added their disapproving support to the family, as did Sir Jaspar Tring (Lewis Arneill) and Desi Martin as old style butler, Charles. As Mrs Brown, Liz Pentland showed how to make a small part memorable. Other small roles and the chorus made their mark on the overall effect, particularly dancers in “ Lambeth Walk”.

Costumes by Utopia were mostly good - some of the female wigs were not great! Sound and Lighting were effective and the Hareford Hall set was well designed but I missed the suit of armour! Pyper directed a pacey show with good comedic interpretation. Angela Harding’s choreography was lively and suited to capability and roles. Ian Milford put much into training his singers and his orchestra made a very good sound.
