The Blakehay was an ideal space for this intimate and vibrant production. The set worked perfectly and due to the thrust stage brought the audience right into the action. The wide age range of the company certainly helped with the casting of the production, defining the adults from the children, this gave more depth to the story. Matilda held her own against the more experienced ‘adults’ and portrayed the well-known character with a naughty twinkle and a need to be loved. Her family contrasted against this sweet intelligent child beautifully causing much hilarity. Miss Trunchball was played selfish and nasty which but also was very likable from the audience perspective, this was a well-rounded portrayal and this young man showed maturity in his characterisation. The innocence and delicate performance of Miss Honey kept the mayhem grounded and she sang beautifully. The uniformity and skilled execution of all the performers showed well trained stage craft and the use of the small stage showed an understanding of the space and its limitations by the production team. A storybook brought to life is the way I would describe this production and I’m sure Roald Dahl would approve, well done everyone it was a total joy……
