MADE IN DAGENHAM The Musical, book by Richard Bean, Music by David Arnold and Lyrics by Richard Thomas is based on the Woolley/Karlsen/Number 9 Motion Picture and tells the true story of what happened when a group of women at the Ford factory in Dagenham were downgraded. Their cause widens to encompass the fight for equal pay. It’s full of community spirit, friendship, love and the importance of doing the right thing.
The stage design was well conceived and of high quality. With a neutral backdrop scene changes were indicated with pictures and logos (London, Ford sign etc) and stage blocks moved accordingly. Different levels were used occasionally, although this sometimes proved difficult to light.
The costumes were in keeping with period and narrative. There was great attention to detail, white boots, geometric patterned dresses, overalls for the workers and so on. There were many costume changes as the action developed. I particularly liked the outfit of Barbara Castle and Caroline’s Biba dress.
The lighting was good (with the exception of the patchy lighting when the raised stage blocks were in use). The sound was generally good but occasionally dipped and made it difficult to understand dialogue with some characters. The small live band provided good accompaniment to the talented singers.
The period feel of Harold Wilson’s 1968 England was beautifully recreated throughout the evening. There were some lovely performances – particularly Chloe Johnson-Jones as foul-mouthed Beryl – and a standout ensemble. There was good use of the stage and when the cast used the auditorium for some exits and entrances, this added to the audience feeling included in the action. Although the subject of the show had serious undertones, there was a feelgood approach to it. Under the direction of Kim Seymour (who was also the Choreographer), this was an evening of enthusiasm and energy that sent the audience home smiling.
