~~My worries about how this society would cope with the change of performing from Bradford’s Alhambra Theatre to a school stage were completely unfounded.  We were greeted at the door with a montage of film, costumes and scenes which led us to the reception area and the door of the auditorium.  Comfortable seating and an excellent view of the stage was our reward, and what a reward we received.  The overture was bright, breezy, well and efficiently played under the baton of Anthony Martin.  I can understand some comments made that this was a recording, as there were no musicians in sight, but knowing this Society and their MD I know it was ‘live’!!

The opening scene of the production was breathtaking with the film studio of Mack Sennett in 1938 being under wraps and covered in dustcovers, as the story flashes back to 1911, so the dustcovers are removed and a vibrant scene of props and characters are discovered, all busy with the production of his latest film, Mabel Norman, a delivery girl from the local delicatessen delivers a sandwich to Lottie the star of the film who is unable to pay, Mabel’s reaction catches Mack’s eye and so he offers her a part in his next film and a new star is born.  So the story develops, through the passage of time, of the rather complicated, one sided love affair, Mabel to Mack and Mack to his many comedy films and the Keystone Cops, everyone works long hours and only has time for the films.

This was a beautifully costumed show (Molly Limpet’s Sheffield) all the wigs and shoes were in compete balance with the movement of time.  Lighting and sound were very effective and, as should be, almost unnoticeable.  The set was a single set, the orchestra at the back on a raised platform and all the props stored underneath; changes of scene indicated by a music hall styled blackboard – ingenious. To be quite honest after a short while into this show I had forgotten I was there in order to write a critique I was ‘there’, sitting back and so happily watching and involved with everything that was going on.  Nicholas Carroll was totally believable as the comedy visioned Mack Sennett as was Megan Elsegood as Mabel, her singing was delightful as was her acting and many quick, efficient costume changes.  Anna Clark almost stole the show with her performance of Lottie and her dance number ‘Tap Your Troubles Away’ brought tremendous applause from the practically full house. The many smaller parts all had their own individual characters excellently portrayed as were the chorus and dancers.

I always enjoy the BCP’s shows, it is the total professionalism of every detail and the teamwork of front, on and backstage crews that pull together under an excellent Director, a first class Choreographer and arguably one of the the best MDs in Bradford, to make a very enjoyable evening for their audience. Congratulations to all concerned and I look forward to next year’s show.
