~~This G & S show is not often performed, possibly because it is so short.  This does give a Society an excellent chance to showcase it’s talents by performing an array of musical numbers from solos, duets to lager group numbers which is what the Dowland Singers did in a very memorable first half.
The second half was a master-class in how traditional G and S works can be transformed by presenting them in a slightly modern context, with the various court members including the judge not always showing full attention to court procedures. Let us not forget the excellent singing though.  This was all in the style of Gilbert and Sullivan.  David Springate (The learned Judge) entertained us with “When I good Friends Was Call’d to the Bar).  Sue McClory (Counsel for the Plaintiff) set the scene for the trial with Tim Coles (The Defendant) pleading with the jury “Oh Gentleman Listen I Pray”.  Veronica Folkard (The Plaintiff) was gracious in her role.  All supporting roles were well played, adding superbly to the production.
The whole evening was under the baton of Musical Director/Producer, Avril Pinkney, well supported at the keyboard by Christopher Hyson. Overall an excellent evening!
